Is it possible to do this walk in the winter season? Or is snow an issue? I am going to be in the area in late May/early June and wondered if it's possible then

No it's not really practical. The snow will be too deep and you'll be walking through the middle of the skiers. The lake itself is part of one of the ski runs once it freezes over.
