I would definitely recommend Melbourne. It has so much to see and do from 3 different zoos to theme parks, to going to the Australia Open in January if you are a tennis fan, to many different markets, galleries, museums and exhibitions.
What animal was on top of the roundabout which had the words fighting animal extinction I got a photo of the roundabout but didn't get a good view of the animal on top of it

Early especially of you are driving as the car parks fill up as well and you will enjoy a walk. Pre purchase your tickets will help. Also not sure if you want to see everything. We skipped the Australian animals as we have a great hands on facility where we live in Townsville. The only queues (quite short actually) we had were at lemurs and butterflies. We enjoyed the elephant show and the feeding giraffes. Hope that helps
