How long should I plan to visit the windmill and historical village? From the website it looks like the house will be closed on the day I plan to visit.

Oh maybe a couple hours. You have to buy tickets so I am sure you know they have to be open when you visit.

If I remember correctly, it was $10/adult for the windmill and $5/adult for the Scholte House. While you're there, be sure to take a run over to Winterset--an hour-and-a-half or so …

While you're there, be sure to take a run over to Winterset--an hour-and-a-half or so west--to see the new John Wayne Birthplace and Museum and visit the bridges featured in "The Bridges of Madison County." Worth a side trip.
