Deserts are areas of great landform diversity and distinctiveness. In the past there was a shortage of desert World Heritage nominations. This situation persists, though shows some improvement.

Hot deserts are found near the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The largest hot desert is the Sahara in Africa which spans the whole width of the continent.
