Baker is a tiny town in Nevada with a population of 41. It's the last stop on America's loneliest road, before entering Utah, and the gateway to Great Basin National Park, Nevada's only national park.

Park rangers don't get paid a lot, but they give their entire hearts to the job. I know because I am the proud daughter of one.

Dotting the vast, arid expanses of the Great Basin and Mojave deserts are precious springs housing improbable and rare forms of life that, while small, play a huge role in their ecosystems.
