The strip below shows a junctional rhythm with retrograde P waves seen just before the QRS complex. The second rhythm strip shows retrograde P waves just after the QRS complex.

When a junctional escape ensues, the rhythm may be confused with a junctional rhythm. If no junctional escape rhythm is present, a long pause resulting in asystole and cardiac arrest can occur.
