Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai residents have been warned after high lead and arsenic contaminants were found in the Kok River.

Rapacious mining operations pump water used for gold extraction straight back into the river without treatment, raising arsenic levels to 26 times the safe level in parts of Chiang Mai.
