美国空军MH-139A计划是近年来最重要的直升机采购计划之一。根据2018年美国空军与波音公司签订合同，美国空军将采购84架MH-139A“灰狼”直升机，合同总价值24亿美元，其中包括采购、培训和后勤服务等条款。第一批直升机预计将在未来几个月内开始取代UH-1N“休伊”，并在未来几年全面投入实战部署。

“灰狼”在8月12日获得军用飞行资格时候，实现了这个里程碑。随着项目的推进，新的状态允许全空军机组对MH-139A的军用性能进行测试。在军方试飞开始之前，自2019年12月“灰狼”抵达埃格林空军基地以来，都是军方和波音承包商共同执行试飞任务。

美空军原本预计采购84架MH-139A“灰狼”新型通用直升机，不仅削减至36架，目前进行的初期战术测评，也被美国国防部指出仍存在重大缺陷，尚未达到作战要求，该机测试进度可能延后。
