Exactly one hundred years ago, Greek and French archaeologists uncovered the remains of a "prehistoric Pompeii" deep under the ashen surface of the Greek island of Thera in the Cyclades.

In 1950 the Santorini volcano experienced its last eruption, closing a cycle of volcanic activity that had begun in 1939.

A map from the Swiss Association of Natural Hazards on Facebook shows that the Cyclades islands, Santorini in particular, have been shaken by hundreds of earthquakes since the beginning of February.
