Central to Morandi’s oeuvre is the still life, a subject he returned to throughout his career. In these works, he allowed bottles, vases, pitchers, fruit dishes, and other quotidian objects that he collected and staged in his studio to transcend their traditional associations.

Morandi’s still lifes are essays in economy. Small vessels, thoughtfully arranged, appear to us at once as real objects, caressed by light and enveloped in space, as geometric forms in elegant proportion, and as strokes of paint, a veil of muted color through which we can make out his pale preparation layer, the weave of his canvas.

Throughout his career, Morandi concentrated almost exclusively on still lifes and landscapes, except for a few self-portraits. With great sensitivity to tone, colour, and compositional balance, he would depict the same familiar bottles and vases again and again in paintings notable for their simplicity of execution.

Morandi's subject matter gravitated towards everyday objects that could be found in any kitchen - such as jars, ceramic bowls and vases, bottles, pitchers, jugs and boxes. These objects are familiar, yet they are purposely stripped of any identifying marks such as labels.
