Members of the genus Chlamydia are Gram-negative bacteria. While the majority of these bacteria have a thin peptidoglycan, the peptidoglycan of these species is not easily detectable. In C. pneumoniae and C. trachomatis, however, genomic studies have shown that they encode for proteins that may be involved in the synthesis of peptidoglycan.
