Apart from providing serenity and the sense of spiritual solace in the middle of a busy town, this temple is famous for the frescos in the image house by the renowned artist George Keyt (17 April 1901 – 31 July 1993) who is considered the most distinguished modern painter in Sri Lanka.

2012年2月17日 · Gothami – a little Buddhist temple in a quiet corner of Colombo, came in to existence in 1900. It would have remained a simple place of worship if not for the fact that George Keyt, a talented Sri Lankan Cubist was commissioned to paint the inner walls of the temple’s little image house in 1941.

2024年2月4日 · George Keyt’s earliest paintings belong to the mid-1920s, and it is estimated that in his lifetime he produced over 12,000 paintings, drawings and sketches, as well as the murals of significant cultural and historical value at the Gothami Viharaya Temple in Borella.

2024年5月23日 · The Gothami Viharaya is the only Buddhist temple in the country which has a valuable collection of paintings done by George Keyt (Rajapakshe et al., 2018). Besides the paintings of George Keyt, the image house of Gothami temple contains the paintings of the well-known Sri Lankan artist Manju Sri (Manathunga, 2016).

George Keyt (1901–1993) was a Sri Lankan Artist. Born into a prosperous family, Keyt was educated at Trinity College, Kandy. He did not start painting until he was 26, but quickly went on to become an international giant of Modern art and arguably Sri Lanka’s most celebrated artist of the 20th Century.

2017年12月14日 · Keyt evolved a distinct personal style of painting, these murals using Hindu and Buddhist art forms. He incorporated costumes and jewellery of the period of the Sakkyas which shocked the devotees who saw them for the first time, with his unorthodox way of depicting the Buddha Charithaya.

2024年5月27日 · Keyt died on 31 July 1993 at the age of 92 (Dalmia, 2016). His body was placed at the National Art Gallery in Colombo for two days and then cremated in the presence of Ruth, Menike, and Kusum (Dalmia, 2016).
