Males are identified by their larger size, iridescent scales, and large red nuchal humps on their foreheads. After a courtship dance by the male, the pair will dig a small pit in substrate where the female will lay around 100 eggs.

Redhump eartheaters are immediate maternal mouthbrooders. These fish grow relatively quickly, and can be sexed as subadults. Sexual dimorphism is clear - males have a large, red nuptial hump on their heads and grow larger than the females. Mature males develop an iridescence on the scales on their sides and very large humps.

The Geophagus steindachneri Cichlid, often known simply as Steindachner's Cichlid or the Hump Head Geophagus, is a remarkable species of cichlid native to the freshwater rivers and streams of South America.

Physical description: Males have a large, characteristic hump on their forehead that develops with age. The body coloring differs depending on the population. Common colors are gold, green, red, orange, and black. The body is marked with irregular black spots. The hump may change from golden to red. The fins are spotted with iridescent scales.

One of the smaller species of South American eartheater, the Red Hump Eartheater is found throughout Western Colombia and possibly into the middle Orinoco drainage, where it inhabits a variety of habitats.

Keep these mouthbrooding cichlids in a large aquarium with robust tankmates. To reduce harassment keep several females to each male. Soft and slightly acidic. pH: 6.0-7.0, KH: up to 15 degrees. Mature males are much larger, with dominant males also displaying a nuchal hump.

Redhumps are one of the most peaceful cichlids and are barely even territorial, except when spawning, when they can be aggressive. Like other Geophagus, these fish sift the sand for food, and using fine gravel is recommended. Well-rooted plants are not bothered. These fish retreats amongst rocks or ornaments.
