The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, located at Meteora-Greece, is the biggest and oldest one of all. It is called the monastery which remains “suspended in the air” (meteoro), because of the cliff formation of a gigantic rock on top of which it was built.

The first people who were documented to inhabit Meteora after the Neolithic Era were an ascetic group of hermit monks who, in the 800s CE, moved up to the ancient pinnacles. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of them as high as 1800 ft (550m) above the plain.

The monks and the nuns abandon the world and come to the monasteries of Meteora in order to be blessed. So, praying is of vital importance for them in order to live spiritually and come closer to God.
