Provo (/ ˈ p r oʊ v oʊ / PROH-voh) is a city in and the county seat of Utah County, Utah, United States. It is 43 miles (69 km) south of Salt Lake City along the Wasatch Front, and lies between the cities of Orem to the north and Springville to the south.

Provo is the third largest city in Utah and county seat of Utah County in Central Utah. The city sites between Mount Timpanogos, a primary peak on the Wasatch Front, and Utah Lake. The city was originally name Timpanogots, after the Native Americans who original lived in the area.

With a population of about 117,000, Provo is located in north-central Utah, approximately 45 miles south of Salt Lake City. Provo is the county seat of Utah County, which has seen explosive growth in recent years. In 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau counted Utah County’s population at 368,536.

Settled in 1849 by a Mormon colonizing mission sent by Brigham Young, its name was changed in 1850 from Fort Utah.
