2018年12月7日 · A sky island is an isolated mountain range that rises up out of the surrounding desert “sea.” The Chiricahua National Monument Visitor Center is 5,400 feet (1,646 meters) above sea level. The high point in the Chiricahua Mountains – Chiricahua Peak – is 9,795 feet (2,986 meters) above sea level.

The Coronado National Forest in southeastern Arizona manages major parts of the Sky Islands north of Mexico. The Forest manages 17 mountain ranges in 12 separate units totaling 1,780,000 acres. Habitats vary from deserts to subalpine forests with the highest point being Mount Graham in the Pinaleno Mountains at 10,724 feet.

“Sky Islands” are isolated mountain ranges in southeastern Arizona and northern Mexico. Some of the mountains rise more than 6,000 feet above the surrounding desert floor making the lowlands and high peaks drastically different. Plants and animals living in the mountains could never survive in the surrounding deserts.
