2009年7月27日 · since the last 2-3 days my betta only flares with one gill, he doesn't completely open the other one. previously he used to flare with both gills completely open. also this one-gill flaring seems to have coincided with him starting to build his first bubble nest. is this wierd? is something wrong with him? has anyone seen this behavior before?

My new betta of about two weeks is only able to flare one of his gills when he's getting all puffed up. I've had bettas before and they've always flared both sides at once. Is this a concern? Has anyone else heard or had this?

2014年7月24日 · Hello all! Just a general question; my betta flares like normal but the gill membrane that comes out only comes out on one side. He's been like that since I got him, and I'm just wondering if it's anything I should be concerned about? Or do they just flare on one side sometimes like I've read somewhere? Thanks!

2009年1月19日 · I have a very healthy betta that only flares one gill...or at least one flares more than the other. He's a good eater, active, and feisty in every way. Maybe it's just a quirk? If it doesn't bother him, it doesn't bother me... Cheers

2022年7月22日 · Hi friend, this is called gill hyperplasia. It’s usually caused by an injury or high levels of ammonia and/or nitrites in the water but in more rare cases could indicate a tumor. Clean water and aquarium salts are best to treat this, a few Indian almond leaves can go a long way too.

2016年11月29日 · I have male betta in a 5 gal cycled heated and filtered tank. Today when I came home from work I saw that he was agitated and had one flared gill. I panicked. Tested the water. Fine. 0 ppm ammonia. 0 nitrite and 10 nitrate. He was fine when I left for work this morning. Ate his food was responsive.

2018年10月13日 · Actually (fun fact) it’s not even their gills their flaring. It’s special flaps of skin right below their gills, called a beard, that they use to make them look bigger. They do this behavior when facing another male betta who may rival him as boss of his territory, or even if they catch a glimpse of their reflection in the tank glass.

If you notice your Betta fish flaring its gills even when it is the only fish in the tank, it is either flaring them at you or its own reflection in the glass. It is very likely for a Betta fish to be intimidated or aggressive towards its own reflection.
