Colloidal silicas are suspensions of fine amorphous, nonporous, and typically spherical silica particles in a liquid phase. It may be produced by Stöber process from Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS).

Colloidal anhydrous silica contains not less than 99.0 per cent and not more than the equivalent of 100.5 per cent of SiO 2, determined on the ignited substance. A light, fine, white or almost white, amorphous powder, with a particle size of about 15 nm, practically insoluble in water and in mineral acids except hydrofluoric acid.
