2023年10月28日 · The comet tail artifact is a grey scale ultrasound finding seen when small calcific / crystalline / highly reflective objects are interrogated and is believed to be a special form of reverberation artifact.

Small bright spots with comet-tail noted on ultrasound may predict a non-cancerous thyroid nodule when located freely in the cystic portion of the nodule, however, they may be associated with thyroid cancer when located in the solid portion of the nodule.

The comet-tail artifact is commonly encountered in a variety of clinical conditions; however, its presence and significance in a thyroid nodule has not been documented before. We document its presence in 100 patients who underwent ultrasound examinations of the neck and thyroid.

2018年2月27日 · Some are short and linear and have comet-tail artifact (dashed arrows), whereas other are longer and linear (solid arrows) related to sound reflection from the back wall of the small internal cystic spaces in this spongiform nodule. FNA cytology is benign.

All categories of echogenic foci except those with large comet-tail artifacts are associated with high cancer risk. Identification of large comet-tail artifacts suggests benignity. Nodules with small comet-tail artifacts have a high incidence of malignancy in hypoechoic nodules.
