The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota (RAF designation) is a military transport aircraft developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War II. During the war the C-47 was used for troop transport, cargo, paratrooper, for towing gliders and military cargo parachute drops.

2015年2月8日 · Few aircraft are as well known or were so widely used for so long as the C-47 Skytrain. Nicknamed “Gooney Bird,” the aircraft was adapted from the DC-3 commercial airliner which first appeared in 1936. The first C-47s were ordered in 1940 and by the end of WWII over 10,000 had been procured for the U.S. Army Air Force and U.S. Navy.

Perhaps no aircraft of World War II has been as durable or long-lived as the C-47 Skytrain. Utilizing Douglas Aircraft Company’s DC-3 civilian airliner airframe, it remains one of the most successful aircraft ever built.

By 1941 the old Air Corps had been transformed into the Army Air Forces, and it selected a modified version of the DC-3, the C-47 Skytrain, to become its standard transport aircraft. As a supply plane, the C-47 could carry up to 6,000 pounds of cargo.

All branches of the US Armed Forces flew the C-47 Skytrain, C-53 Skytrooper, or R4D, as appropriate. The British Commonwealth air forces called the aircraft Dakota. Douglas delivered the last C-47 to the USAAF on October 23, 1945.

2017年8月2日 · WHEN HE WROTE his memoir of World War Two, titled Crusade In Europe, General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, credited the bulldozer, the two-and-a-half-ton truck, the Higgins boat landing craft and the Douglas C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft with enabling the Allies to gain the final victory.
