But the Sandhills actually begin north of the Nebraska border with an oasis of cactus, hills and water in southwestern South Dakota. And as is often true with beginnings, the South Dakota Sandhills have a story of their own. Maps of the Sandhills show them spilling into South Dakota, but you won’t need a map to find them.

Sand Hills, region of grass-covered, stabilized sand dunes in the High Plains of north-central Nebraska, U.S. Extending 265 miles (425 km) across Nebraska and a portion of southern South Dakota, it covers some 19,300 square miles (50,000 square km). It lies mostly to the north of the Platte and North Platte rivers.

The Sandhills of South Dakota occupy an area of slightly more than 400 square miles in south central South Dakota and are a northward extension of the much larger expanse of Nebraska Sandhills. Their distribution in South Dakota includes the southern portions of Shannon, Bennett, Todd, and Tripp counties.

The state can generally be divided into three geographic regions: eastern South Dakota, western South Dakota, and the Black Hills. Eastern South Dakota is lower in elevation and higher in precipitation than the western part of the state, and the Black Hills are a low, isolated mountain group in the southwestern corner of the state.

Up to 600 feet of sands and clays, buried the Black Hills within 2000 feet of their crests in western South Dakota, forming the White River Formation, while some erosion occurred in the east. Gravel deposits containing crocodile bones and land snails, tortoises and hackberry seeds are also common in the fossil record.

Sandhill cranes, while famous for massing in great numbers along the Platte River in Nebraska, do migrate through South Dakota in the spring and fall. The fall migration offers a unique hunting opportunity for those in the right place at the right time.
