You don't really gain anything, though: you can't do much more on that page than you can do on the New Tab Page. Results will be shown on a DDG page in both cases, so you can refine your search just as you may be used to. Bottom line: you don't have to visit duckduckgo.com to use 'DuckDuckGo as Default Search Engine.'

I can open a new tab and type refurbished mobile phones into the search bar on the New Tab Page (NTP). This will - for me - send my query to Bing and after a moment or two the page refreshes to show Bing's search results.
