The Imperial knife company began rooting itself into the cutlery business as a pocket watch chain knife manufacturer in 1916. The founders were involved in the jewelry industry before embarking of their knife endeavors. Schrade eventually bought Imperial out & merged to create the Imperial Schrade umbrella.

Imperial tended to use very good steel in all their knives, even the cheap shell handled knives would cut as well or better than most other knives from the same time period.

In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery.
