Ahmad Zahir - Wikipedia
Ahmad Zahir (Pashto / Dari: احمد ظاهر; 14 June 1946 – 14 June 1979) was an Afghan singer, songwriter and composer. Dubbed the " Elvis of Afghanistan ", [1] he is widely considered the all-time greatest singer of Afghanistan. [2] . The majority of his songs were in Dari followed by Pashto, with a few in Russian, Hindi and English. [3][4]

On June 14, 1979 — his thirty-third birthday — Ahmad Zahir was killed. The government said he had a traffic accident; everybody else says he was shot in the head. News spread through the country like a shock wave.

Zahir was recognized by NPR as one of the 50 GREAT VOICES that changed the world. His burial site has been rebuilt by fans and since then, every June 14, his birthday, pilgrims have flocked to the Cemetery on the southern edge of Kabul to lay flowers on his grave and play one of his last memorable songs.
