In 1935, Cwmtillery employed 180 men on the surface and 1,400 men underground producing 400,000 tons of steam coal from the Black, Meadow Vein, and Old Coal seams. The manager around that time was A.E. Hiscox. The colliery possessed a coal preparation plant (washery), coke ovens and a by-product plant. The manager was R. Rutherford.

Cwmtillery Red Ash Level - Northern Mine Research Society
In 1899 it employed 53 men and in 1900 it employed 67 men working underground and 11 men at the surface of the mine with Mr. Lewis still the manager. It is shown on the 1902 map of the Monmouthshire part of the Coalfield as still being owned by the Cwmtillery Red Ash Colliery Company. It was producing house coals and employed 60 men in 1902.
