I wish Florian was more humanoid like them, and maybe even a new playable character - although I guess he couldn’t be much of a companion in that case.

Nope he is like the "Pilló" prince from Mario & Luigi Dream Team. AKA super important but harmless to Plumbers. Mainline Mario games don't have backstabbing companions with hidden agendas.
