Wicklow Town in the late 1600s
The history of settlement in the area of Wicklow town stretches back to at least a Viking settlement around the ninth and tenth centuries. With the arrival of the Anglo-Normans, Henry II gave the Black Castle and its surrounds to Strongbow in 1173.

The Goal at Wicklow town was built in 1702. On 15th Aug 1649 Oliver Cromwell landed at Ringsend Dublin, his time in Wicklow was brief but his impact, and the later impact of his armies under the control of Edmund Ludlow was great indeed. William of Orange in 1690 led the army that defeated James and his Irish partisans at the Battle of the Boyne.

Most of Wicklow’s important buildings were constructed during the 19th century including the Courthouse (1824), the County Infirmary (1834), The Marine on the Murrough (1839), St. Patrick’s Catholic Church (1844), the Halpin Memorial, Fitzwilliam Square (1897) and the 1798 ‘Billy Byrne’ Memorial, Market Square (1899/1900).
