The impressive remains of the ancient caravan city of Palmyra stand in the middle of the desolate Tadmorean Desert in Syria. All around are natural barriers: mountains to the north, west and southwest, while to the east and south are dry flatlands, with the volcanic basalt desert of the Hauran merging into Jordan.

The extant physical evidence for silk at Palmyra dates primarily from remnants discovered and utilized as funerary offerings and mummy wrappings for the bodies of the wealthy citizens interred in Palmyrene tower tombs. These types of tombs date from the first century B.C. to the second century A.D. (See Figure 1).

Hence the existence of Palmyra, which is recognized by even the most critical historians as a true caravan city, is an important resource in the study of the Silk Road [1]. There are of course the impressive remains (Fig. 2) brought to light by travellers, first in 1678, and by archaeologists in more recent times.

A grand caravan city and center of multiculturalism, Palmyra was well situated on a desert path linking the great land, sea, and river trading corridors that extended from China to Rome, popularly known as the Silk Road.
