Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1930, Robert Bateman was a keen artist and naturalist from his early days. Bateman painted wildlife and wilderness in a representational style until his teens when he began to interpret nature using a variety of contemporary styles including post-impressionism and abstract expressionism.

His key paintings are The Dead Knight (1870), also known as The Three Ravens, which was the title used when it was displayed in 1868, The Pool of Bethesda (1877, exhibited at the Royal Academy 1878), The Raising of Samuel (exhibited at the Royal Academy 1880) and The Lily or the Rose (exhibited at the Royal Academy 1882).

While Bateman began his career as an abstract artist, in the mid-1960s, he turned towards realism to capture wildlife in its various habitats after being inspired by the work of Andrew Wyeth. His work fuses a realistic style with dynamic compositions, and captures both the particularities of the natural world and his conservationist spirit.
