USS Virginia (CGN-38) was a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser, the lead ship of her class, and the eighth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She was commissioned in 1976 and decommissioned in 1994.

USS Virginia (CGN-38) History. Built in Virginia by Virginians, USS VIRGINIA was constructed at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. Her sponsor was Virginia Stuart Warner, daughter of then Secretary of the Navy and now senior US Senator from Virginia. The ship was commissioned on 11 September 1976 in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Base.
