Started in 1936, opposite the French Maginot Line, it stretched more than 630 km (390 mi) from Kleve on the border with the Netherlands, along the western border of Nazi Germany, to the town of Weil am Rhein on the border with Switzerland. Note: Because the maps are so large, each was digitized in a series of four to six overlapping images.

In the summer of 1940, work was stopped in favor of the Atlantic Wall construction. By then, 3 work groups with 10 combat stands, 4 observers and the Obersimten Type B Bunker had been completed, and approx. 5 km of tunnel passages (remaining in 2006) had been driven.
