UA Local 488 was founded on September 10, 1904. Before Alberta even became a province, members of Local 488 were hard at work and paving the way for generations to come. What started as only a few members has grown into one of the largest piping unions in North America.

Local 488 has been advocating for updates to agreements, leading to positive changes such as swab-only tests for pre-access in fab shops and no pre-access testing for mod yards and some pulp mills. These changes depend on client policies. Exciting news on the work front: PCL has called for their mod yard, marking the first such project

getting Local 488 chartered. Their combined efforts resulted in a significant victory—reducing the demanding work week from 70 to 54 hours.
