The existence of AEAA dates back to 1982 when it was born out of what was known as the sub-regional Conference for Heads of Institutions responsible for Educational Assessment in Eastern and Southern Africa (AEBESA) whose founding members were Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Lesotho and Malawi.

The Educational Assessment and Examinations Services (EAES) will host the 41st Association for Education Assessment in Africa (AEAA) annual conference on 25th to 29th August 2025, in Skylight Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
