In response to populist unrest, both Democrats and Republicans alike used the built-in advantages of the late 19th century party system to largely stifle the agrarian movement. Any gains made by the Populists—in constructing an accessible financial system, in regulating railroads, or in democratizing politics—came later, if at all.

The agrarian revolt in the USA during the 19th century was a movement by farmers who were discontented with their economic situation and the policies of the government. They faced numerous challenges, including falling crop prices, high transportation costs, and heavy debts.

No longer would presidential candidates make concerted efforts to court the agrarian vote. Rather, big business and large urban centers would greatly influence the outcome of elections as opposed to votes being widely dispersed throughout the United States.

The Grange was replaced at the forefront of the agrarian revolt by the Farmers' Alliance. Between the mid 1870s and 1880 two Alliances emerged: the Northwestern, or Northern Alliance, and the Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union, better known as the Southern Alliance.
