2011年2月8日 · I ordered bearings, shims, and the whole works to set up my gears. The package came today but they forgot to throw in the gear marking compound:shaking:. I live way out in the sticks (120 miles to where I could buy some compound) and I was wondering if there is something else I could use instead, that is easily and readily available? Toothpaste?

Make you own DIY gear marking compound out of Desitin (Butt Cream). A little goes a long way! It's an alternative to expensive and hard to find gear marking compound.

2008年8月7日 · Gear marking compound...as in metal marking compound to detect high and low spots and wear/contact areas? If this is what you are looking for, almost any machine shop should be able to get you some Prussian Blue or Dykem layout fluid.

2017年2月20日 · Using Desitin (Butt Cream) you can make a very good differential gear marking compound. The real stuff is expensive and if you lose the small packet this will work in a tight spot.

Prussian blue works well, also white lithium grease will work. Also oil based paint from the craft store works well.

I'm setting my ring and pinion gears in the rear differential. Can't seem to find gear marking compound at any of the local shops. Any good substitute? I've heard maybe white lithium grease but may be too thick. How about homemade recipies?
