So, he became very angry with the society and he took a vow – this town which has been unfair to him, he is going to kill 101 people. 101 people he will kill and he will cut each one of their thumb, and wear it as a rosary around his neck, a garland of fingers or thumbs.

When Angulimala saw Lord Buddha, he decided to kill Buddha instead of his mother, whom he saw first and decided to make him his victim. Then he ran to kill Buddha as fast as he could, but he couldn't catch up to Buddha. Angulimala gave up and called Buddha to stop. But the Blessed One replied that it is Angulimala who should stop.

Angulimal saw Gautam Buddha coming. Even that dangerous man, who had murdered nine hundred and ninety-nine people already, felt for the first time that he also had a heart. Gautam Buddha was looking so innocent, so childlike and so beautiful in the early morning sun.

Angulimala had already killed 999 people, and he was seeking his 1000th victim when he encountered the Buddha. He chased after the Buddha, intending to kill him, but instead the Buddha was able to persuade Angulima to give up his negative actions. Angulima became a disciple of Buddha and eventually reached arhathood.

Angulimala decided to kill him instead. He charged after the Buddha with knife raised, but the Buddha kept moving ahead out of his reach. Angulimala could not catch up, no matter how much he tried. Finally he shouted, “Stop! Stop!” The Buddha replied, “I have stopped. It is you who have not stopped.” Angulimala didn’t understand.
