Archery and firearm hunt applications and permits are processed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Public Drawn Hunt System.

At Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, the proposal would almost double the 115,240 acre refuge in size by adding up to 95,000 additional acres. At Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuge, the proposal to acquire up to 55,000 acres of land would result in a major expansion of the 4,526 acre refuge in Jackson and Matagorda Counties.

Fishing in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge's public area is limited to saltwater fishing on San Antonio Bay via our fishing pier or wade fishing. Fishing from the bank is not permitted. Anglers can fish year-round on the refuge's fishing pier overlooking San Antonio Bay.

Preliminary survey data indicated 329 whooping cranes, including 38 juveniles, centered on Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. The survey shows an upward trend in whooping crane abundance over the last five years and the highest ever documented for this population.
