The Assamese alphabet [3] (Assamese: অসমীয়া বৰ্ণমালা, romanized: Ôxômiya Bôrnômala) is a writing system of the Assamese language and is a part of the Bengali-Assamese script.

Assamese is an eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken by about 20 million people in the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, and also spoken in Bangladesh and Bhutan. Assamese is closely related to Bengali and Odia. Assamese was first written with a version of the Brahmi script in 300 BC.

In this course, we will learn the Assamese alphabets and numbers. We will also learn about how the vowels take a different shape when added to a consonant. At the end of this course, one should be able to read simple Assamese sentences.

It is written in the Assamese alphabet, an abugida system, from left to right, with many typographic ligatures. Assamese was designated as a classical Indian language by the Government of India on 3 October 2024 on account of its antiquity and literary traditions.
