Hunting elk in Colorado is a popular activity among sportspeople. We’re here to help make sure you do your research, plan carefully, and stay safe while enjoying the outdoors.

These hunts are for Antlered Elk Only (Bull Elk) and are available in 93 hunt units (GMUs – Game Management Units) in Western Colorado. The latest available harvest data from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is from 2019 (see tables below).

Ask any elk hunter worth his weight in lead what the top hunting units are in Colorado, and GMUs 1, 2, 10 and 201 in the far northwest corner of the state rise to the top of the list like smoke from a muzzleloader. Bulls in the 300-plus size are common, and elk tend to stay put over the seasons.

Nonresidents can purchase over-the-counter licenses for rifle elk, bear, archery pronghorn and white-tailed deer.
