Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best overall index of kidney function. Normal GFR varies according to age, sex, and body size, and declines with age. The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) convened a Task Force in 2021 to focus on the use of race when estimating GFR.

Estimates GFR in CKD patients using serum creatinine, cystatin C, or both. The 2021 CKD-EPI equation is now the recommended standard.
