15.6: The Fungal Phylogeny - Biology LibreTexts
These two groups of fungi are referred to as the dikarya because some portion of their life cycle is dikaryotic. When two compatible mating types meet, they fuse together and begin the process of fertilization with plasmogamy (fusion of the cytoplasm).
A genome Tree of Life for the Fungi kingdom | PNAS
Fungi form one of the largest eukaryotic kingdoms, with an estimated 1.5–5 million species. They form a diverse group with a wide variety of life cycles, metabolisms, morphogenesis, and ecologies, including mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism with many live organisms.
Fungal Taxonomy, Phylogeny, and Ecology | MDPI Books
In this Special Issue, we are pleased to publish a comprehensive assemblage of 23 papers covering fungal taxonomy, phylogeny, and ecology, in which 76 new taxa from a broad taxonomic group and different ecological habitats are reported.

In our interactive tree of life you can explore the relationships between 2,235,473 species and wonder at 105,463 images on a single zoomable page. Each leaf represents a different species, and the branches illustrate how these many species evolved from common ancestors over billions of …
Fungal evolution: diversity, taxonomy and phylogeny of the Fungi
We here review the current status of the phylogeny and taxonomy of fungi, providing an overview of the main defined groups. Based on current knowledge, nine phylum-level clades can be defined: Opisthosporidia, Chytridiomycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Zoopagomycota, Mucoromycota, Glomeromycota, Basidiomycota and Ascomycota.
A Genome-Scale Phylogeny of the Kingdom Fungi - PMC
Li et al. analyze 290 genes from 1,644 species to infer a genome-scale phylogeny of the fungal kingdom. Analyses using different approaches and data matrices show that 85% of inferred relationships among fungi are robustly supported. The results provide a robust phylogenomic framework to explore the tempo and mode of fungal evolution.
The Fungal Tree of Life: from Molecular Systematics to Genome …
In this article, we review the major phyla, subphyla, and classes of the kingdom Fungi and provide brief summaries of ecologies, morphologies, and exemplar taxa. We also provide examples of how molecular phylogenetics and evolutionary genomics have advanced our understanding of fungal evolution within each of the phyla and some of the major ...
