2004年2月8日 · A gear oil API GL 4+ exceeds API GL4, but it doesn not fulfill API GL 5. There are some special gearboxes (e.g. VW T4 all-wheel) in which an API GL 4 would not be sufficient but that do not need a gear oil according to API GL 5.

It should not be used in any transmissions requiring an engine oil or automatic transmission fluid, or GL-4 performance level. It says, for Mobil 1, that their GL-5 fluid can be used in GL-4 recommended differentials, but not GL-4 trannys.

2006年6月8日 · It also contains a list of GL-4 certified or GL-4 applicable MTFs. This applies to Pennzoil and GM Synchromesh. After my own research on GL-4 applicable MTFs, I'd look for MTF with the synchronizer friction additive instead of just gear oil, pick the right viscosity as per your spec, and make sure it's yellow metal compatible.

2007年7月2日 · The GL-5 just uses twice as much. GL-4 test components are no longer available and have not been for several years. In the past oil companies passed the GL-4 tests with 1/2 the treat rate of the GL-5 with same additive. SO without the ability to test for GL-4 companies use 1/2 the treat rate of their GL-5.
