Created by United Nations General Assembly resolution 46/182 in 1991, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) is the longest-standing and highest-level humanitarian coordination forum of the United Nations system.

The IASC engages with timely and challenging issues of system-wide significance, providing leadership, commissioning tools, and establishing mechanisms to improve humanitarian response.

The Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) was established in June 1992 in response to General Assembly Resolution 46/182 to serve as the primary mechanism for inter-agency coordination relating to humanitarian assistance in response to complex and major emergencies under the leadership of the Emergency Relief Coordinator.

Protection is a core priority of the IASC, ensuring the rights of all people affected by humanitarian crises are at the centre of humanitarian action.
