Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi) is the largest subspecies of cutthroat trout and the state fish of Nevada. It is one of three subspecies of cutthroat trout that are listed as federally threatened .

The Lahontan cutthroat trout is one of 13 living sub-species of cutthroat trout. This fish is native to the Lahontan Basin of northern Nevada, northeastern California and southeastern Oregon. This subspecies exhibits three life histories including: stream-type, migratory and lacustrine forms.

Lahontan cutthroat trout inhabit a wide range of habitats from cold, high-elevation mountain streams in California to lower-elevation and highly alkaline desert lakes in Nevada. They once occupied a vast range east of the Sierra Nevada but have been extirpated from nearly 95 percent of their native habitat in California.

The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT; Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi) evolved in the hydrographically isolated Lahontan Basin of northeastern California, southeastern Oregon, and northern Nevada where ancient Lake Lahontan ebbed and flowed over millions of years.

Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT) is one of a few species of trout native to Nevada and inhabited the ancient Lake Lahontan and its tributaries during the ice ages until the lake shrank to remnants like Pyramid Lake and Walker Lake about 7,000 years ago.
