Part of GE's "Dash 9" series of locomotives, the Dash 9-44CW shares its frame, HiAd trucks, 16-cylinder 7FDL engine, and 752AH-31 traction motors with the GE Dash 9-40CW. But while the more common 9-44CW offers 4,400 horsepower (3,300 kW), software in the 9-40CW's engine-governing unit restricts its power output to 4,000 horsepower (3,000 kW).

2024年3月18日 · As of late-2014, all of Norfolk Southern’s C40-9W units have been re-rated to 4,400hp, making them officially known as C44-9W’s. In the early 1990’s, the Chicago And North Western (CNW) experienced a slight struggle for horsepower in hauling their increasingly long Powder River coal trains.

Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) was the sole operator of this model. [2] The company owned 125 units, numbered 8764–8888. [3] NS specifically requested the standard cab and may have purchased more units had the Federal Railroad Administration not required it to purchase the wide-cab C40-9W version instead. [1]
