The Library's docent-led tours are an excellent way to see highlights of the Schwarzman Building. Our official tours are also the only way to get group access to many of the Library’s must-see spaces—including the historic Rose Main Reading Room. Meet for your tour in the Visitor Center.

Some reading rooms, including the historic Rose Main Reading Room, are open to the public for research and quiet study without an appointment while some collections require advance consultation with staff and/or an appointment to view.

The interior of the building contains the Main Reading Room, a space measuring 78 by 297 feet (24 by 91 m) with a 52-foot-high (16 m) ceiling; a Public Catalog Room; and various reading rooms, offices, and art exhibitions. The Main Branch became popular after its opening and saw four million annual visitors by the 1920s.

Schwarzman Building. Hours: Two times a day, at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, the library offers free docent-led tours.
