This is incorrect. U. S. Marshals have been appointed by the U.S. Marshals Service since 1789, and are not elected.

This is a list of Old West lawmen: notable people who served in various law enforcement positions during the Old West period. 1851–? First sheriff of Pembina County, Dakota Territory which also made him the first sheriff in what is now the State of North Dakota; also served as Pembina town marshal, and Pembina County deputy sheriff.

This building is the Baltimore City Police Department’s Western District station which replaced the Old Western District Police Station on Pine Street.

Although the presence of legendary lawmen such as Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Doc Holliday, and Wild Bill Hickok may have helped "civilize" the Wild West, it was the presence of numerous law enforcement agencies, strict regulations, swift judicial justice, and the vigilance of the populous that actually helped to settle this region.
