R 766 was commissioned in 1952 as one of 70 members of the Victorian Railway's R-class 4-6-4 ‘Hudson’ main line passenger locomotives. These locomotives were designed by Victorian Railways and were urgently required in post-World War 2 period, but construction had been delayed by competing priorities.

The impressive, re-gauged oil-fired locomotive spent the night in Junee after arriving in the town for the first time on Thursday afternoon. It’s the first time an R-class steam locomotive has travelled this far south in NSW, with R766 being the first of its kind to be converted from broad gauge to standard gauge for operation in the state.

The R class was an express passenger steam locomotive that ran on Australia's Victorian Railways (VR) from 1951 to 1974.

The Rado caliber R766 is an automatic watch movement with 21 jewels and a frequency of 3.5 Hz (25,200 beats per hour). This movement is basically an ETA caliber A31.111 with a Rado branded rotor. Rado and ETA are both controlled by the Swatch Group conglomerate of watch brands. In Rado’s own words:

This locomotive R 766 was built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1952 for Victorian Railways. It was one of the last members of the class in service when it was withdrawn in 1968.
