The Smith & Wesson Model 3 is a single-action, cartridge -firing, top-break revolver produced by Smith & Wesson (S&W) from around 1870 to 1915, and was recently again offered as a reproduction by Smith & Wesson and Uberti.

Schofield Patent Revolver - In the late 1860's the U.S. Army was shopping for a breech loading fixed cartridge revolver to replace the aging 1860 Colt Army percussion revolvers. They tested the Colt single action and the S&W Model No. 3 American.

U.S. Army Major George W. Schofield proposed improvements and in 1875 the Top-Break Model 3 was adopted for use by the military. The revolver was favored by cavalry soldiers because it could be unloaded using one hand.

Smith & Wesson developed their famous No. 3 single action (SA) revolver around 1868 and it remained in production until 1898. Like any single action revolver, the No. 3's hammer had to be manually cocked before the weapon could be fired.
