P. vivax trophozoites show amoeboid cytoplasm, large chromatin dots, and have fine, yellowish-brown pigment. Schüffner's dots may appear more fine in comparison to those seen in P. ovale .

Young trophozoite is characterised by less condense cytoplasm with scattering of free ribosomes and minimum amount of endoplasmic reticulum. The trophozoite grows by feeding on the host cell cytoplasm with its cytostome.

A mature trophozoite lies between two mature schizonts in this field. Note the large number of merozoites in the schizonts, which helps differentiate P. vivax from other malaria species.

The nucleus of the P. vivax trophozoite divides asexually and repeatedly (schizogony) into an average of 14 to 22 segments. During the stages of division, the parasite is known as a schizont. The cytoplasm finally divides to form separate small masses around each nucleus as shown in this mature schizont.
